I bow to the goodness within myself,

Who is the true teacher.

This essence inside takes the form of truth, consciousness, and bliss.

Always present and full of peace,

This essence inside is completely free,

And sparkles with divine luster.

-Yogic chant

It was in my studies of dynamic meditation practices that I first found the definition which gave words to the instinctive and intuitive way I have come to view wellness throughout my life and studies:

“Medicine, here, refers to your unique expression of presence, power, and human potential, what you need in order to be whole, and what you have to offer others. I use the term in its original Greek sense of guidance. Medicine is guidance toward wholeness. Sometimes it is bitter to taste; sometimes sweet. Either way, it is growthful if we are able to take it in. Your medicine is both a gift from outside and a quality of your inner nature,” John Davis, Ph.D.

This definition was compelling to me because it creates space for anything to be medicine, depending on how it is practiced and expressed, making it highly situational, individualized, and dynamic. This way of conceptualizing medicine also takes into account the whole person--body, mind, and spirit. But perhaps most importantly, this definition holds that medicine is inherent within the individual, that it is a self-initiated, self-maintained, and self-empowering process.

This definition altered my paradigm for wellness, and echoed my experiences studying psychology, yoga and meditation, herbalism, and expressive arts, as well as from my personal self-healing.

The artwork I create is the product of and my expression of the healing lessons and practices that resonate with me. It is my hope that as a viewer, you will be able to find your own sense of easeful reflection in this work, one which mirrors the sense of intuitive healing that I experienced in the process of creating it.

This heartwork is, in the words of Davis, simultaneously my medicine and my offering. It is my unique expression of presence, power, and potential. The process of creating this art, and sharing these practices for wellness--to engage and inspire others to pursue their medicine--is what I need in order to be whole, and is what I have to offer others.
